a little about me
a little about me
Hi! My name is Kylie Murphy and I am a recent graduate of Kent State University. In May, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies with a concentration in Global Communication and a minor in Media Advocacy (it's a mouthful, I know). Just as my studies sound, I am very passionate about global issues, social movements, and advocacy work.
With my academic programs and volunteer work, I have learned that I love outreach and connecting with people locally and globally, whether done through storytelling, design work, media, or a simple conversation.

Essentially after changing my major multiple times, I was forced to declare a Communication major if I wanted to graduate relatively on time. Clearly there are many details missing from this story, but the important thing is this degree ended up being everything I was looking for.
I was among the many people who had a deep misconception of what this field truly entails. Contrary to popular belief, it is not just learning how to talk to people- it is both different and deeper than that.
I have found there is a lot of freedom in the direction a student wants to take their degree in this field, so my experience may be different than others.
Personally, I tailored my program to be one that focuses on global media, research, design, and activism. From this, I had the opportunity to take courses such as “Communication Research Methods” and “Social Media and Movements” where I had to rely on both qualitative and quantitative research to collect, analyze, and understand given topics, specifically issues related to relational communication and food insecurity. Along with this, I took “Activism and Protest in the Information Age” and “Social Movements and the Collective Action” while being an exchange student at the University of Leicester. These courses allowed me to gain knowledge of how Information Communication Technologies can alter how the public perceives and engages in activism, the role of media in protest movements, and the theoretical approaches of movements through both a social scientific and sociological perspective.
Throughout my studies, my professors were passionate about the field of Communication and they always said how we use our communication has the ability to change the world and I wholeheartedly agree.
This was just a quick (or long depending on how you see it) synopsis that could probably go on forever if asked.
